The eROSITA telescope, a joint Russian and German mission, has unveiled its second major data release, containing nearly two million X-ray sources across the western sky. A3266 is a massive cluster connected by a filament of gas to a neighboring group of galaxies. Thomas Reiprich and Jakob Dietl from Bonn's Argelander Institute made a groundbreaking discovery: they measured the faint X-ray glow in A3266's outer reaches for the first time. This measurement revealed gas that is hotter and denser than predicted by current models, and it contains surprisingly little in the way of heavy elements.
This finding raises intriguing questions about the formation and evolution of cosmic structures. The gas in the outskirts and filament appears to be relatively pristine, having spent little time near galaxies. However, its temperature and density contradict expectations for such unprocessed material.
