Today's hike was a challenging but rewarding experience, and it's fascinating to reflect on the various elements that contributed to our journey. We started the day with a quick and easy hike, just 3.5 miles to a road crossing, which was a great way to ease into the day's activities. The trail was flat and alternated between pine trees and open fields, providing a pleasant and varied landscape.
One of the most notable aspects of today's hike was the bug situation. It seems we've entered the hot, humid, and buggy portion of the trail, and the gnats were relentless. They persisted throughout the entire hike, annoying me and getting into my eyes, nose, ears, and mouth. It's amazing how such tiny creatures can have such a significant impact on our hiking experience.
Despite the bug issue, we made good progress and were able to hitch into Great Barrington, where we did our resupply and enjoyed a delicious breakfast at the Great Barrington Bagel Company. It's always a treat to have a good meal while on the trail, and the bagel sandwich and cinnamon roll were a welcome treat.
After breakfast, we hit the trail again and followed along the Housatonic River for a flat mile before starting to climb. The first part of the climb was steep and humid, and I was drenched in sweat in no time. However, the second climb was less challenging, and I was able to make it to the top without too much difficulty.
One of the most interesting features of today's hike was Ice Gulch, a small and narrow canyon that ran along the trail for about 100 yards. It was a unique geological feature that added a bit of variety to the landscape.
As we continued on the trail, we encountered a medium-sized black bear, which startled me and made me feel a bit uneasy. It was a surprise to see a bear on the trail, and I was grateful that it turned around and walked away.
The final part of the hike was a 500-foot climb up Tyringham Cobble, which was easier than I expected. The descent went quickly, but I had to navigate some slippery bog boards as the sun began to set. It's becoming a regular occurrence for me to hike in the dark, and it's something I've come to accept as a part of the trail experience.
